Fall 2017 First Reactions (All the shows I’m watching)

Holy crap, this is a great season. Where did all of these shows come from? Why did they wait until now to appear? So far, all of this more than makes up for the dismal summer where nothing new but Made in Abyss and Restaurant from Another World put a positive impression on me. It’s strange how events and expectations can change so quickly. Anyway, onto the shows.

In no particular order:

March Comes in like a Lion Season 2

This is the second season of that great shogi anime centered around the depressed character Rei Kiriyama. Starting off with this second season, we see how Rei has changed. He’s made some friends, is actually allowing himself to have some fun, and is in a generally better mental state. This is shown through the anime’s opening shot where some light actually made its way through his apartment. Such a change from the first shot from the original season. If you have seen the first season and loved it, here is more. I can’t wait to see where this one goes and how Rei’s life improves.

The Ancient Magus Bride

I’ve been waiting for this one since watching the three episodes of the OVA, and I am glad it’s finally here. Ancient Magus Bride is centered around a teenager red haired girl who lived a rough life and decided to sell herself into slavery, because maybe somebody would actually want her. Turns out she was bought by an ancient wizard with a cow bone face, which is the best possible thing that can happen to her. Now she is being introduced to the wonderful world of magic, something that has been haunting her for a long time, in a positive light. It’s very shoujo, but it’s a lot of fun.

Girl’s Last Tour

This series is so simple, yet so complex at the same time. This is an anime centered around two girls (Chi and Yuu) traveling motorcycle tank thing in a post-apocalyptic world. As far as we know, these two girls are the only two people that are alive in that world right now. We see them travel from one amazing scenery shot to another and see how these two kids interact. We also see things that we consider normal as completely foreign to them, which is interesting to me. I want to see where this one goes.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie

This is a show centered around a 30-year-old woman, which is unique for anime, who completely dropped out of the business world and became a NEET by choice. She creates a male mmo character and plays that mmo day in and day out. Along her way playing through that game, her character meets a female character played by a male player. A romance forms online and the two somehow bump into each other in real life. It’s very cliché in some ways, but it’s incredibly heartwarming and funny. I highly recommend it.

Just Because

This is a small romance series centered around the last portion of the senior year of high school. After leaving everyone behind for a long time when he moved away to a different city, he returns for the last portion of high school to shake up his friend’s lives again. A group of friends unite after a long time, a sort of couple meets up again, and some other low key emotional stuff. The only complaint I have is that the main character feels detached from the whole thing, but I think there might be a reason for all of that. I hope the show explains why soon. Still, can’t wait to see where this one goes.

Osumatsu-san 2^nd Season

This is the sequel to the hit comedy sketch show that aired a year and a half ago. It centers around a sextuplet set of brothers who are way too relatable to millennials as a whole. It’s a very generational comedy thing. Each episode is split in half and has a different skit or theme that the shows plays off of. It’s very hit or miss for me, but that’s what comedy is for me in general. I still think it’s worth a watch.

Zodiac Wars

This is such a dumb fun watch for me. The main story is that characters that are made from the Chinese zodiac and fight each other every twelve years. This is an anime is as pure of a battle royale that can exist. There is very little story and the characters are starting to develop as the story goes along and interact with each other. The animation and direction are great. Watch it if you like blood and gore. It’s a lot of violence and action fun for me.

Inuyashiki

Where do I start with this one? It’s an anime centered around a 58-year-old who looks older than he is, nobody cares about him, and he is about to die in three months. One night when he’s at the park, aliens accidently kill him and another person that was there, so they are rebuilt with alien military technology. Thus, begins the adventures of an old man super hero thing. I don’t know if I am going to keep up with this show at all because it might be too insane for me. It also bothers me that so many characters are filled with hate. I guess I will find out in the future if this is too much for me to handle.

Blood Blockade Battlefront and Beyond

Speaking of insanity, there is this show. It’s been a couple years since this show aired, and the adventures of Leonardo Watch and Hellsalem continue. It’s a show about the episodic adventures of Leonard and friends in this city exploring different elements of the city and going through day to day craziness. It’s incredibly well animated, as per usual by Studio Bones, and is much more coherent then the first season ever was. You can jump through to this season right now because it’s all episodic.
