It’s that time of year again. A beginning of a new year. Now we are 2022 and we are still in hell because…yeah. This is 2020 Part 3. And now its time to look back at the films concerning anime that I really enjoyed in 2020 Part 2 or just 2021. Yup. These are basically how I do my own special anime awards if you can call them that. Yeah, it’s just me liking these for unspecified reasons that don’t matter in terms of categorization. There will be four of these for different reasons. Hope you enjoy them.
For this post, I will not be pointing to any sees that I rewatched over the course of the year because otherwise this would be a long post. Lets discuss the new movies that I really enjoyed.
Violet Evergarden: The Movie
Yeah, I was never going to write a full post about this one because I really don’t have that much to say about it. It’s a good film and a good conclusion to this story. It looks great the way you would expect a Violet Evergarden movie to be. It had all the emotional appeal to Violet finally discovering herself and then what she truly wants. I just don’t have anything interesting to say about it. It is what it is and that is all I can say about it.
Pretty good bit of a teenage drama. Very calm and relaxed in tone like our main characters. Great piece of media of the joining of older traditions and the modern world for the current world. I like all of that. It also looks great and I like all of that here as well. Highly recommend watching it on Netflix.
I am still in complex shock that we got this one. Mobile Suit Gundam movie in a legal way. So excited it came out and I am so glad that it was a good film. I like the Hathaway character and I love so much of the visual effects of this movie. Not everyone enjoys it, but I like the continued aspect of this story even if some of the writing around the women were kind of eh at best. Still Tomino writing. I can dig it.
Yet another film that I shocked that this came out this year too. Man, this film was wonderful. Such a full integrated experience into the final journey of Hideaki Anno himself. Kind of amazing for all the efforts put into it here too. Finally, Shinji is an adult in this so wonderful experience. Not everything is solved but that’s ok. That is the way the story goes here as well. The visuals are so impeccable as well. Just such a good experience for all of it.
Talk about such a visually impressive experience. This story has a very simple story, but it’s well thought out and has some interesting stories for it as well. The meeting of ocean and space. A cute girl meeting two people of the sea as well. A tale of a girl growing up and seeing the universe being born. Yeah, not much else what to say about that here. Such a cool thing.
Yeah, 2021 feels like a year where all the anime we ever wanted finally despite everything in the pandemic. Here we are with anime about producing anime the sequel and its good stuff. Its great to see the Shirobako cast appear once again and create something great. It is wonderful to see the creative process put into the forefront again in anime. Always a good time.
A wonderful growing up tale about a boy who loves science and his friends over mystical and unexplained things that happen in their town. Plus there are cute penguins all over the place! Yay, I love all of it here. Very well written and efficient movie here.
Fate/Stay Night: Heaven’s Feel III
Yeah, it’s a conclusion to the the Heaven’s Feel route. Sakura finally gets her redemption with Rin as the two sisters join together in ultimate fate combat. Such a beautiful looking film for all the reasons and places involved with it here. A great finale to this conflict that shook the foundations of all of this world in so many ways. Finally, the holy grail was reached and all that. Such fun times and it finally appeared.
Conclusion
So yeah, these were my favorite films that I haven’t watched previously that I enjoyed in 2021. If I had rewatches, I would have things like Paprika, Macross Plus, and such and that isn’t fair to the other films that I watched. What happens just happens I suppose.
