Last year, I started a small graph system that I used to rank the weekly episodes I’ve watched. I’m going to bring it back for this season and see how it goes. The thing being that Komi won’t be apart of this because its almost over from appearing on Netflix weekly.
Now, this doesn’t mean that the episode on the bottom is bad. Just that they weren’t as good as the others. That’s it really. In the end, this is all arbitrary after all just like most of what I blog anyway. It’s just another thing, what is the difference?
Love Live! Superstar Cour 2 and Devil is a Part Timer Season 2 will appear next week I think? It’s hard to tell. Ranking chart will be at the end of this post.
Seasonal Anime Episode Thoughts
Tokyo Mew Mew New Episode 1 (Premiere)

I never watched the original Tokyo Mew Mew anime series, I just wanted some more softer magical girl stuff in my life. At only a small amount of episodes, this was the one that spoke to me into trying out too. It was really fun though. Very 90’s sort of shoujo in having a loveable dumbass as a main character, cat based magical girls fighting to save endangered animals too, and just all sorts of character tropes that I am not used to seeing anymore. That last one in a more hetero kind of sense because princes are female and female students love them. Very interesting time.
But yeah, it was just fun and had a lot of good amount of honesty towards the characters and the story too. Not to mention that this is very well animated. I loved when Ichigo turned into Ichigo Mew and just started tripping on random things instead of being bad ass. Or just loveable sorts of things too. Great character animation and action animation too. This is going to be a fun show that I will just chill out with for the rest of the season. If its amazing, then that will make it happy. If its not and it stays comfy, that is fine for me too.
Komi Can’t Communicate Part 2 Episode 11

The first half of this episode was alright. The gag of Komi just being under her mattress cover and then popping out of it fully dressed in her school girl outfit was really good. Then the Yamai segment when Komi had a rip in her tights was….better then I expected. For the rest of the episode, we were just introduced to the cast. So it was generally alright. Not the best way to have a penultimate episode, but far from the worst too. So yeah, still going with alright on this one.
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun Episode 1 (Season Premiere)

So, this was a generally good episode of introduction to this season of Made in Abyss. I say that despite all the sorts of content warnings that Made in Abyss has even if they are down more tastefully then usual. Yeah, sexual assault and pee stuff came back but it was generally alright. Great episode of displaying all the original trip down the giant hole and adventure to the Golden City. Then we return back to Reg, Riko, and Nanachi traveling down to it. Perfect set up for more to time. Definitely a solid return to this season.
Call of the Night Episode 1 (Premiere)

Pretty fun episode about a boy slowly being lured into the world of the night. A boy who doesn’t understand love or connect with society, so wanders Tokyo late at night to live or feel something. The boy’s name is Kou and he’s just a middle schooler. On his wanderings, he meets the vampire Nazuna who wants to draw him into the world of darkness even more, through some good romantic and superman like scenes, so he can enjoy it and he can drink his blood. A very sexy vampire to be sure too. Really creative color designs and colors in this scene too. Generally phone episode here too.
Shadows House 2nd Season Episode 1 (Season Premiere)

It has only been about four days since I’ve finished the first season, so this just felt like the natural sort of conclusion for me. Man things are getting scarier around here. A veiled doll is wandering around the house. Kate and her master’s friends with her dolls are being watching while being trained too. Poor Emilico. A crazy episode that sets up a lot of good stakes while getting to know more about Shadow’s House. So many interesting turns are still happening in this episode and Kate got to stand out a lot in how cunning and intelligent she is. Yeah can’t wait for more.
Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer Episode 1 (Premiere)

This is the first time in a while where I just don’t want to watch this show even if I read the manga. The wit and writing of what I like about Lucifer’s manga is there with Yuuhi throwing away the lizard who tried to recruit him into a war and seeing him use the powers in normal, perverted ways. Or him meeting Samidare fit great and added how the coming war that isn’t there problem is going to be there’s in an interesting way. This show looks like crap though. At least Bisco looked ok, but this one just sucks. Its legitimately making me think about not watching it. I’m not usually an elitist in this way, but oh my god did I hate it. We shall see. It might be one of those that I see if it passes the three episode test at least in terms of writing.
Aoashi Episode 14

Honestly, this show is pulling off a lot of those dramatic twists and turns much more maturely then I would expect it to. I’m really happy about that. Its true that Fukuda has been plotting for Aoi to be a defender all along, but besides Aoi just disappearing to the bus stop with barely any memory on how he got there, the cast has helped him to come back to it. The moment between Hana and Aoi was really good. Same with the team/friends that Aoi has founded have helped him to find some comfort in the position. Now, we will see what Aoi will do at his first time as a defender. It probably will take some getting used to as one would expect.
Yurei Deco Episode 2

A surprise to no one, the real world behind Yurei Deco shows up. Why else would Berry’s parents want here to fix her eye? Her “broken” eye was the only way that she saw the real world for what it is. The world’s police really did try to hunt down our hacker friend after she and Berry escaped the witch’s realm. All of which lead the anime to the obvious reveal. Berry saw adults deleting everything from an online space, including racial violence, from the internet. Censoring the world for the kids. Considering that Berry’s parents are in on it, of course she ran away. Very good and complicated episode in ways that I really dig.
This Week’s Episode Ratings

Not watching Lycoris Recoil? You should check it out if you haven’t, it’s pretty solid.

I’m kind of waiting it out because it feels like a show that could go north or south.

I get that feeling too…

Yeah, I had the same thoughts on Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer. I tried really hard to like it, but I just don’t. I probably won’t watch more episodes. There’s just too many awesome anime that came out this season! I’m having a hard enough time keeping up with watching the anime I really like, I don’t really have time for the “meh” anime. And I still need to squish in the second season of Shadows House! I totally thought that wasn’t going to come out until fall, so I didn’t leave enough time to fit that into my anime schedule. Ah, what’s an otaku to do when they are just showered with great anime!

First episode of Biscuit Hammer looked pretty bad. Hoping this gets resolved cause otherwise, yeah, probably gonna be dropping it as well.

Right? I at least want to give it some kind of chance before dropping it.

Yeah, I’m kind of there too. Still want to give Lucifer a chance anyway even if its kind of fruitless. But yeah, very happy with all the cool anime this season!

This is (probably) going to be a good season. Overlord, Shadow House, and Abyss are returning classics. Call of the Night and Lycoris look really good. for different reasons. Yurei Deco may turn out to be a first rate dystopia and I love dystopias. Too bad about Lucifer but they may get their act together. Of course it is too early in the season and everything could go south but at least I now have hope.
If Overlord can make it back maybe there is still a chance for Tanya. They left her hanging.
I know people will hate me for it but I thought last season was pretty mediocre. Spy x Family was about the only show I could get behind wholeheartedly. The other stuff was… meh. I ended up watching old stuff to fill the void.

I don’t think there should be any reason to hate you for not liking much from last season. It was kind of empty and had to struggle to find some stuff to watch. Just glad there is more this season.

So, here’s my take on your list:
Tokyo Mew Mew New was fun! Never watched the original and honestly don’t know what drove me to check it, but it was fun. Made in Abyss still great, the goat of the season. Call of the Night had an amazing premiere and I’ve not yet finished the first season of Shadows House. Don’t know if I will so soon. I want to check Biscuit Hammer because I heard great things about the manga but the anime, well… Still gathering some courage. Ao Ashi? Still great. And finally, I’m yet to check the 2nd ep of Yurei Deco (actually going to do it now).
(We do have a few common titles figuring on our lists this season, that’s pretty cool :))

Yay, I’m glad that someone is watching similar shows to me :). That feels so rare for me.
I just watched Tokyo Mew Mew New myself because I just wanted to watch something different. Just trying to find a selection of diverse anime titles to get a god sampling of the season perhaps? Not sure what else to say about that.

Mew Mew definitely looks like it should be a lot of fun. I only just finished the original show kind of recently so I’ll probably wait a little bit before jumping in, but it does have that classic Shojo vibe to it. I heard a rumor that they’re going to try and condense the 52 episodes into 12 which I think would be too fast so I’m hoping the show is actually 2 cours instead. If not I guess we’re about to get a true fast blast for the remake.

Considering the slow pace of the first two eps, trying to condense 52 eps into 12… yeah. That could be rough.

Yeah definitely hoping it’s not true. The rumor first started because the official Tokyo Mew Mew website for the new show says it’s only going to be 12 episodes and a lot of sites have run with it, but the reason it’s still skeptical and being treated like a rumor is because of how nonchalantly it was put there. Like it seems like it would be a bigger deal if that was confirmed. Granted, the old series had a lot of filler that you could cut out to make the show shorter, but then I feel like it could fall into the Sailor Moon Crystal trap where by cutting out all the filler, it cut out massive amounts of development for each character. (I know some preferred Crystal but to me the original series was a rare case where the filler was really necessary and made the series better) Either way I’m hoping the show lasts for a lot longer than that but sounds like the first episodes have had good pacing so far.

Mmm, if its a rumor that comes from an unknown source I don’t tend to believe those. But it feels like a good comfy pace to me so far.
