Fall 2022 Anime In Review

Yeah, I am writing this a lot later into next year then I do usually. I blame G-Witch getting delayed every other week due to special programming in Japan. That it also the reason why my top shows for 2022 post hasn’t come out yet either. I wanted to write this post before working on that one. But all in all, I am glad that a little bit of the Fall 2022 season has pretty great. Even the shows that weren’t as good as the others were pretty quality honestly. It was that kind of season that didn’t just have good shows, but a wider variety of shows for everyone. There are still shows from last season that I want to check out. Those being Do It Yourself, Bochi the Rock, and Akiba Maid War. I’ll get to those soon.

A Handy Guide for how I feel about shows:

Solid: Seasonal Favorites, Highly Recommend.
Good: Maybe not as high quality as the first category, but still pretty enjoyable.
Ok: What it says on the tin. Maybe preferable for those who are into the genre the show is from.
Bad: I’m not even sure why I am still watching it besides maybe learning something from it.

Mob Psycho 100 III

I’m not sure what else to say other then it was a beautiful finale to Mob’s story of acceptance and making friends. The story with Dimple finally came to some sort of conclusion and Mob had to struggle a lot to accept the powers inside of him. The only person who didn’t accept those powers they were born with was Mob himself and he did it through some really heart felt explorations of his inside self.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury

I plan on writing a longer post about this show in the future because it is a gundam show after all. There is something to be said about a Gundam show approaching its story in such a different way that hopefully connects more with people who weren’t gundam fans. There is a lot of things to get into this series in just its first cour because it is a complex sort of show that has many things moving int he background until they explode. Especially the parental trauma with it meeting some sort of head in the end of this cour. It’s taken some turns I have and haven’t expected from Gundam.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These – Intrigue

It’s more Legend of the Galactic Heroes with the show finally coming off of the food and delivering some excellent space series exploring that course of ones actions, how political situations change over time, and what the costs of war are. This show was slow, but it felt like it had a point because every little detail mattered in the Empire’s inevitable invasion of the Free Planets Alliance.

Raven of the Inner Palace

I always liked this show, but it really ramped up since its second half. There is a lot of interesting things to explore in Shouxue’s story of becoming the Ravel Consort and what that title actually means and how it affects her relationships with other people around her as she gathers friends and opens up about herself more. Its really great stuff no matter how you look at it. Season 2 please!

Tiger and Bunny Season 2

I plan on writing more about this show soon, but know that it introduced a lot of new characters that I liked and the ending was rushed, but it did conclude the major Tiger and Bunny story that started since the beginning of the series. Very worth watching if you like Tiger and Bunny even i it doesn’t achieve those heights.

Chainsaw Man

I don’t think this show is as strong as it could be, but its still well animated and decently written. A solid enough adaptation for people to sit back and watch if you like what the anime is presenting. I say this despite the act that this manga takes a little bit to warm up and this manga still hasn’t hit the best material for the show yet.

Spy X Family Cour 2

I don’t think this cour is as strong as the first half. That doesn’t have to do with the adaptation itself, but the manga that is being adapted is still good just not as interesting. Still really enjoy this show and look forward to season 2 and the movie.

Urusei Yatsura (2022)

I’ve been nervous to start the older anime for a long time because its so long, even if Mamoru Oshii is involved, so this new series by David Productions was a great option. I am sure it doesn’t take the place of the original because I can still tell a lot o things were cut out because its a “best of” series, but its wildly creative and so full of chaotic energy that I can’t help but enjoy it.

Bibliophile Princess

In concept, this show was pretty great. I loved that this was a cool romance about a shy girl who loves reading books changing the world around her by sharing the knowledge she gained. That is all together excellent stuff. Same with the prince being in love with Elianne just for being herself. and seeing Elianne learn to express herself more. That is genuinely a great show in all the concepts, but its lacking a lot of cohesion in how the story is presented. Just saying that its very mediocre in those regards but I can’t say its all together bad.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer

Basically the same as last time. I think the major emotional beats were in this season and the writing is still decent. The direction and animation still ware down on what the story is trying to say or succeed at doing. The writing is why the whole adventure is why it is stuck together in any shape at all. Just needed a better adaptation for such good source material.

Conclusion

So yeah, this was the Fall 2022 season for me and hopefully, this Winter 2023 season will at least be ok. I have somehow picked some series for me to check out. It meant a bit more research then I had to do or this season even if I missed some shows that I am going to watch soon. That means that I h ave some 2022 wrap up posts to work on. They should be out next week. I’m sorry for the lower effort posts recently. Just fighting off some bit of burning out. Should be back to normal soon before getting into March for some fun times.

  1. Yeah, DIY and Bocchi should *definitely* be on your “sooner rather than later” list.

Agree on Spy X Family, this cour was nowhere near as strong and spent a lot of time treading water. Supposedly it picks up again in the chapters that should be covered in the next season.

  2. Congrats! Everything you watched last season seemed to be okay or better, that’s pretty good! There really were a lot of really good or at least better than average anime that came out in Fall. I hope you can find some series that you enjoy just as much for the Winter season too. I think I’ve found a few that are pretty good.
