After thinking about it, I dropped Nier. It just didn’t have enough going on for me to look at it without playing a video game that I will never play. Even with the cool science fiction setting that I probably won’t find anywhere else, it wasn’t enough to watch generally ok video game cut scenes and not much else.
Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 1
A really horrifying start focused on a new protagonist named Einer. A man who helped rebuild his village in Northern England before he was taken and enslaved by the Vikings for beer money. The amount of dehumanization he went through after his family was killed AND his captors just plain ignored him was very eye opening for the horrors in the world.Where would he run too if he decided to leave? No one knows. He has no money or name in the area he is in even if he is taken to another farm. Thorfinn does come in the end of this episode to awaken some since of rebellion in him again, but we won’t know what that is like for a while.
High Card Episode 1
It’s been a while since I’ve seen something similar to Darker Then Black. People with different sorts of powers through special playing cards? Yeah, I can easily dig that concept and this episode generally did it pretty well. So on top of that and this poor thief kid trying to get money for these orphaned kids to live on. It’s a very obvious sort of hook, but it’s enough to get me into this world and feel something about it. It’s cool and I can’t wait to see what happens next over the horizon.
Kubo Won’t Let Me be Invisible Episode 1
Well, if you need a dose of sugar this season….it’s Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible. Shiraishi is a boy with zero presence that is so not there in the realm of humanity that he isn’t picked up by his classmates besides a “oh, I saw Shiraishi! Now he’s gone.” Then there is the most popular girl in school, Kubo, who just teases him from his lack of presence and teases him into possibly being more present then he is currently. Plus she just likes the guy and is just happy at getting Shiraishi’s Pine contact information. It’s really cute with no ounce of cynicism and I dig it.
Tsurune – The Linking Shot – Episode 2
Wow, this show is certainly moving around pretty fast. But it doesn’t feel fast, it feels natural. We had a small build up to the next tournament for our Kyudo nerds. Not just our friends, but Shu and his team mates who are dealing with a little fall out from the last tournament they lost. One even turning down his position after suffering from a quick draw. Oh, Shu’s little sister showed up and she seems cute. Then we move towards the tournament itself where Onogi meets some guys he knows on the way to the rest room, a first round of arrow firing, and then Minato’s senpai showed up. See, that’s a lot of things but it never felt too fast. It was so comfortable.
Tomo-Chan is a Girl Episode 2
Well, this show continues to go ways that I didn’t expect it too. I mean, Tomo-chan had a little bout with a groper on the train which eventually leads to an argument with Jun and her arguing about her wearing a skirt which inevitably leads to Tomo-chan not wearing her shorts under her skirt on the way home and Jun getting uncomfortable from Tomo-chan’s panty shot facing Jun (that we don’t see and that’s good). Gundo was of course behind that. Then a small cute thing happened with Charlotte, an exchange student, who became friends with Tomo-chan pretty easily. Yeah, it was just a good time without too much camera leering and everything. This show remains to be good.
Bofuri Season 2 Episode 1
It’s back! It’s finally back and the show never left. Even the opening is the same for Maple’s comfortable adventures with guild and other guild mates after last season’s ending. Just Maple turning into a monster destroying a level 3 boss. Just Maple and friends gaining more abilities with sally’s speed increasing and Kasumi getting a power that turns her into a loli. Plus, the level 4 event happens and her guild just hangs around with others eventually leading to a Christmas party. Yeah, it really is just fun times all around. So nifty and comfortable like only Bofuri can be.
Urusei Yatsura (2022) Episode 13
This episode was pure craziness and I love it for that. The teachers deciding to lock down against their students trying to eat after school, so they each try to find shops that students will go to after school and it was just pure craziness. Students rebelling against teachers for their meals with some teachers just losing it like some sort of war drama. Every single moment was just so funny that I couldn’t help but laugh. The second half of this episode wasn’t as good because Ten played with who each girl was going to end up with a tool that got it wrong. Still, the girls of this show were pretty fused about it and the drama was comedic. Just wish that wasn’t what it was about in the end. Decent enough episode though.
Trigun Stampede Episode 2
This episode made me pretty confident about my opinions regarding this Trigun series. This felt like an episode out of the original Trigun but so much more sympathetic to everyone. I mean, everyone. After the attempt for a town to round up Vash which was something that happened in Trigun, the Nebraska family showed up like you would expect them too. But how that conflict happened was different.
Vash only shot one battle and that was to split a bullet. Instead, after VAsh convinced the towns people that were after him to save both of the Nebraska family members, they all drank at a bar. It was the modern approach to that happening and so on theme for Vash the Stampede too. I loved it including the little hint of what was going to happen in the future with cyberized insects. I think Knives found him. I also find the dynamic that is slowly developing between Vash and his followers to be pretty interesting. Very good episode.
The Fire Hunter Episode 1
This was the stunner for me this week. I watched this not only because of the concept, but because it has Mamoru Oshii behind the script and Kenji Kawai behind the music. This opening episode was really cool. I wish it wasn’t so out of order in some aspects, but the story behind Touko trying to be a good but being a burden on everyone was painful. The Fire Hunter died in front of here and now she has a sickle and a dog named Kanata protecting her. She is leaving here village where no one wants her on a voyage of two years to return the Fire Hunter’s things to his family. So many little bits of world building and character to go along with it. It’s great!
Last year, I started a small graph system that I used to rank the weekly episodes I’ve watched. I’m going to bring it back for this season and see how it goes. I just want to make my opinions a bit more clearer other then “I really like this anime episode that did those things?”. If this helps at all.
Now, this doesn’t mean that the episode on the bottom is bad. Just that that it wasn’t as good as the others. That’s it really. In the end, this is all arbitrary after all just like most of what I blog anyway. It’s just another thing, what is the difference?
