Weekly Seasonal Watches: Winter 2023 Anime Season Week 6

Seasonal Watches

How did we get to the halfway point of this season already? I’m kind of shocked it happened like that. Now I also started watching Soaring Sky! Precure every week too but that is its own things too.

Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 5

Kanute is here to take over the crown of Denmark and take England for himself. I’m glad to see him and his crafty ways again as much as I am to see Thorkell’s hugeness and blood thirst. Especially since the two are on such opposite ends of their spectrum. Kanute using such huge amounts of psychological warfare with some poison on his side to get everything he wants. I wonder how long Kanute will be able to do everything he has been unchallenged because Thorkell is obviously going to have some words to say here too. That was so exciting.

High Card Episode 5

This episode felt like it was reaching too far and it didn’t make any of them. A younger police detective investigating Pinochle to find out why she shouldn’t be involved with people that have card powers can be a good plot. Unfortunately that was handled haphazardly from her arrested Finn and then got attached by a mafia card user who can control objects is also a good idea if that was the only thing going on. Too bad we also got introduced to the villain when he was giving a speech as a thinly veiled mafia charity event too. This was supposed to be a turning point episode and it just flubbed everything. Man…at least it has style.

Kubo Won’t Let Me be Invisible Episode 5

A lot of things have happened in this segment once again. A lot of flirting (but it’s not as horny), but Kubo and Shiraishi trade meals, Shiriashi talks about his interests in anime which leads Kubo to watching some of it, Kubo is teased by her friends about her crush on Shiraishi (with one of her friends being flirty and wanting to take Kubo’s first kiss), and then the final moment where Shiraishi just couldn’t get the hint that Kubo gave him Valentine’s day treats and unknowingly gives Kubo a white day gift. So yes, it’s a lot of cute stuff in one episode once again.

Tsurune – The Linking ShotEpisode 6

A really amazing episode of all sorts of excellent moments through out it. For instance, the girls themselves had an excellent looking round of Kyudo. It was only one thought even if it was full of each of their personality and such elegance. I wish we could see more rounds, but I am happy they won third place at this local tournament and the boys got to cheer for them. Then seeing Minato learn something after watching these women, like how he was originally trained, and achieve an excellent form was good too. So yeah, very happy about this episode.

Tomo-Chan is a Girl Episode 6

The episode where Tomo-chan becomes as girly as possible in the first half while becoming as manly as possible in the second half. The first half involves Tomo-chan’s birthday which means Carol and Gundo dressing her up as girly as possible and getting Tomo-chan to run into Jun. It really caused some excellent moments through out it. Plus, Gundo is attracted to Tomo-chan…there are no other ways around it. Otherwise, the dodge ball game went how I expected it to go with Tomo-chan and Jun having one tough opponent at the end. Yeah, solid and excellently balanced episode.

Bofuri Season 2 Episode 5

A simple episode focused on some characters we haven’t seen as much and then others are kind of thrown a bit to the side less then before. Maple is fighting a tentacle monster underneath the see and just decided to eat it which is hilarious. Meanwhile Kazumi works hard at a lower dungeon to get her snake familiar and the twins work incredibly hard to get their bear familiars. A lot of tries and retries with help from IZ and her items too. So yeah, just good and comfy times through out.

Urusei Yatsura (2022) Episode 17

The first part of this episode was something else. For instance, Rynosuke wanting a bra finally, but being roped into playing the male part of the relationship with Shinobu so some thugs can take pictures to disuade the boss to not go after Shinobu anymore and Rynosuke can finally buy her bra for once. then Ataru ruining everything as usual by bringing in his mother’s bra. That was a bit of a chaotic mess for sure. The second half with Ataru and his family getting three wishes randomly and not having any chance to use them was pretty hilarious because you can see how horrible the family dynamics are in this situation. Plus, it all looked really good honestly. So a bit of a mixed bag of an episode, but I still had a lot of fun with how chaotic this show is.

Trigun Stampede Episode 6

Well, that was one powerful Wolfwood episode that places him in the exact opposite position between him and Vash compared to last episode. Wolfwood and Vash ride on the Sandsteamer to Julie city and it all falls apart with Wolfwood’s actual brother goes out to kill Vash and thus wake up security on that steamer. Then we get Wolfwood’s backstory involving him getting injected with the serum that allows him to withstand damage turning him into an adult when he was a kid. This was also the introduction of this show’s Legato Blue Summers who is manipulating everything in this episode from Wolfwood’s flash back to here. A busy episode once again, but it captures all the menacing and impact it wanted to have.

The Fire Hunter Episode 5

This is the episode where Touko takes the reigns more then Koushi and finally honestly. I loved it when Akira, another fire hunter that is an attractive woman, saves all of them and then takes them to a struggling village before taking them to a boat that will lead them to the capitol the next day. That bath scene where she strips down, doesn’t show anything on screen, but everyone sees her was huge. Same with them picking up a young spider that was apart of the group that is sending fiends after everyone and then Touko uses the Fire hunter Sickle. So cool and I’m so proud of her. Animation has gotten more consistent here too.

Koushi does get some some scenes at a party along with his sister just holding some fire that turns into lightning for some reason. Holy crap, how did a five year old get that? What about seeing Koushi with the fire hunter and discussing how fire works. Or all the dogs. There are so many dogs in this episode and all of them are good. Same with the action scenes actually doing something cool and not being awkward this time. Yeah, exceptional episode.

Weekly Ratings

Last year, I started a small graph system that I used to rank the weekly episodes I’ve watched. I’m going to bring it back for this season and see how it goes. I just want to make my opinions a bit more clearer other then “I really like this anime episode that did those things?”. If this helps at all.

Now, this doesn’t mean that the episode on the bottom is bad. Just that that it wasn’t as good as the others. That’s it really. In the end, this is all arbitrary after all just like most of what I blog anyway. It’s just another thing, what is the difference?
