Winter 2023 Anime in Review

I don’t have a lot to say about the previous season. I keep thinking about it and thinking about it and while there are shows that I liked and glad saw the sun a bit compared to last season when they would be buried, it didn’t have that much impact honestly. I think that is ok though. Cool of seasons are something we need from time to time. Same thing regarding covid or production delays for a number of shows. So we are seeing a lot of strain put into an already over worked industry. Can we go for lesser shows to watch because this season was pretty bad for this honestly.

Anyway, winter 2023 anime. Let’s talk about those and not production whoas despite still loving a lot of the shows that appear. Here we go:

A Handy Guide for how I feel about shows:

Solid: Seasonal Favorites, Highly Recommend.
Good: Maybe not as high quality as the first category, but still pretty enjoyable.
Ok: What it says on the tin. Maybe preferable for those who are into the genre the show is from.
Bad: I’m not even sure why I am still watching it besides maybe learning something from it.

Vinland Saga Season 2 (First Cour)

Many people joked about this season being the farmville season and we will be here for a long time. No one mentioned how we would be looking at the politics of people being stuck on a plantation and forced to be slaves. Every inch of people trying to beat others down to gain some sort of power. Thorfin goes through a lot just by being around his new friend Einar and finally puts down his knives after all this trauma. Also its interesting to see the wealth gathered by this farm owner and a broke Danish country that is going to ruin everything there going forward.

Tomo-Chan Is A Girl

This was something that I didn’t expect to love so much and yet, it’s really good. A very interesting romance from the point of view of Tomo-chan who is a tomboy but wants people to recognize her as a girl despite her strength. That complex sort of relationship between Jun and Tomo trying to find a way to develop that relationship and defeating adolescene is something else here. Also, I love Mizusu and Carol too because this cast is great. Highly recommend.

Tsurune: The Linking Shot

I like this season quite a bit because I feel like it improved on so many things in the character level. First season was so relaxed with Kyudo kind of being there with our boys somehow making it to nationals. This season had a lot more reflection between our characters and so many others characters. There was a lot of anger and while some characters are angry and provide some tension, it’s nice to see our boys look past it and mature. Plus, it looks so good. Kyoto Animation never skimps on anything.

Trigun Stampede

You know what? This show is a little hectic but I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was something that took such a different approach from the original season. The first show was mainly about Vash’s peaceful approach against the world. This show was a lot more action heavy and sci fi and more about the subjugation of plants or bio humans that provide people power and resources but they are over used. It’s a bit more complex in a way that doesn’t hit as hard perhaps, but still very interesting. It also looks great too. Best CG anime I’ve ever seen.

Soaring High! Precure

This is my first precure series and its really cool honestly. A little simplistic in its ideas because its a kids show, but its so much fun honestly. It’s also going at a decent pace too and developing its cast in such wonderful and fascinating ways too. Sora is also a reverse isekai protagonist magical girl who wants to be a hero and her relationship with Mashiro is really good. Yeah, I think so many people would enjoy this one if you can stand to watch kids shows.

Urusei Yatsura (2023)

The first season of this show was pretty solid over all. I think that sometimes its just a show I would watch to pass the time on Thursdays, but it really started to get interesting near the end of its second cour. More science fiction elements came into play and we learned more about Lum and friend’s backgrounds. Ataru was also present as well and he’s hilarious, but the show isn’t as much about him anymore and I think its better for it honestly. Also, this is still a drop dead gorgeous show. Holy crap man.

Bofuri Season 2

This was the one show that got hit by covid so it might not be over yet, but this the second season. I feel like I know where it is going and honestly nothing will change my opinion of it at this point. Bofuri is such a fun show. Especially since this show has been much more casual compared to the first season. As in, all the guilds talk to each other and work together more. It’s a great cast of diverse characters and I like seeing them bounce off each other. Plus, Maple is still her insane self so its still such good times.

The Fire Hunter

This is where The Fire Hunter is for me now. The first half of this season was full of energy and excitement despite the animation and art quality just not being there. The second half had some exciting moments before having us watchers staring at our watches to see when an attack by the Spyders will happen to the capital season. The season ended with that attack still on its way and such. The world is very interesting but the pacing behind the show is destroying it honestly. I might check out the second season maybe.

High Card

Then there is this show and I am not watching the second season. This show started out as just an okay episodic adventure show with people dressed in suits with special abilities. It should have stayed there instead of going for some unearned drama and diminishing the villains that were sort of developed maybe. Seriously, how do you have a waifu that controls gravity and you don’t use her right? So yeah, this entire show was a waste of time.

Conclusion

So this was my winter season and it was pretty fun. Very curious to see how Spring turns out honestly. I have quite a few shows that I am interested in and I hope they all turn out alright. I guess the season has already started as of this post and perhaps there is some idea of that already. Something for future scott to figure out. For now, we have to face Scott of the past.
